About Kochi (or Cochin):
Kochi (formerly known as Cochin) is a major city and seaport located on
the south-west coast of India by the Arabian Sea in the state of Kerala.
The city of Kochi is the 2nd largest city of Kerala. The city lies
about 220km (137mile) north of the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram.
Kochi is well connected to neighboring cities through several highways,
such as NH47, NH47A & NH47C. The city has two major railway
stations; Ernakulam Junction (or South railway station) and Ernakulam
Town (or North railway station) which are operated by the Southern
Railway. The air gateway to Kochi is the Cochin International Airport
(CIAL) located at Nedumbassery, which is about 25 km (16 miles) north of
downtown Kochi. Kochi and its sorroundings have major tourist
attractions including Fort Kochi Beach, Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary,
Veega Land, Boat ride in backwaters, Kodanad wildlife reserve, and
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Kochi has many reputed higher education
Institutes or Universities including, the Cochin University of Science
and Technology, the Central Institute of Fisheries Nautical and
Engineering Training, the National University of Advanced Legal Studies,
the National Institute of Oceanography, and the Central Marine
Fisheries Research Institute, Rajagiri School of Engineering and
Technology, SCMS Engineering College, Amrita School of Business, the
Government Law College-Ernakulam.
